Data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics and Census Bureau show a net total of 262,000 union members added in 2017. Overall union membership and coverage rates (the percent of jobs held by union and employee association members, and the percent of jobs covered by union and employee association contracts, respectively) did not change significantly in 2017. Union and employee association members comprise an estimated 10.7 percent of wage and salary workers in 2017, while unions and employee association contracts cover 11.9 percent of the workforce, both unchanged from 2016.
